Drum Circles….what kind of image comes to mind? People banging randomly on drums–just making noise? The drum circles at the JSO Community Music School are anything but random. Tia Harvey, our drum circle instructor, works tirelessly with students to improve their rhythm skills while having a good time. Students are exposed to a variety of world percussion instruments in class. In addition to discovering new instruments, students learn valuable rhythm skills and vital teamwork skills. Drum circles are level playing fields where everyone can have a chance to be the leader. Positive peer pressure and interaction are promoted in these circles. No previous experience is necessary to participate and there is no age limit. Come join the fun and express yourself in a creative way!
The JSOCMS held our Hogwarts Music Camp in June. What a fun time was had by all! 27 students attended and put on a great concert at the end of the camp. The highlight of Hogwarts (besides music) is all the “magic” that happens. Each day brings different surprises and challenges!
Mrs. Miller and the Sorting Hat!
Our Sorting Hat (with the help of Mrs. Miller) does an amazing job. The week began with each camper being “sorted” into the appropriate Hogwarts House. From there, the games began!
Students visited the “Potion Table” and received regular mail delivery from their Owls. Each night the owls went to roost at a different location in the JSO building. Some mornings it was a challenge to locate our owls!
Creating our own potions was a big hit with the students!
During the morning, students worked intensively with private instructors. They learned new pieces, polished skills and discovered the value of teamwork. Playing in an ensemble can be fun and rewarding.
Ensemble playing can be a blast!
We ended each morning with a lively game time. Theory games were never so much fun. A healthy sense of competition between Hogwarts Houses helped a great deal. Students are playing musical twister and flyswatter note names on staff.
Hogwarts Camp is a highlight of our musical year! Each year, students anxiously await to see what new things may happen at Hogwarts!
